Vancouver Webloggers’ Meetup

The quasi-regular Vancouver Webloggers’ Meetup (organized by Darren Barefoot) was in session again tonight where we met at The Whip on 6th Street off Main. An interesting choice of venue: Good, cheap food, slow service, and the first time in my life that I’ve been told at an actual, commercial restaurant or bar that they ran out of Coca Cola!

Met a lot of people tonight, including a number of new faces. Hi to Oana from Maktaaq , for example. Oana was surprised when I suggested that the word Maktaaq looked like it could be a Klingon word. She informed me that it was in Inuit word, but now that I looked it up, I haven’t the faintest idea why she would choose a title with a meaning like this:

Maktaaq, pronounced “muktuk,” is the sushi of the North, a delicacy that drives Inuit hunters each spring to the edge of the retreating ice to claim their yearly quota of whales.

Colene checking out a guy's soft hairI took a couple of crowd shot pictures tonight, but the photo of the evening is definitely this one of Colene and SomeGuy (sorry, didn’t get the name) Shane shortly after she discovered that his hair is ultra-soft, and shortly before we were all checking it out for ourselves (it was true).

Also reconnected with a couple of old acquaintances, talked some bull, and had some fun. Somebody (probably Darren) collected names and URLs (and “sexual position”?) from everybody, and I’m sure it’ll be online by tomorrow morning either at Darren’s blog or else linked-to from there.

Now it’s back to work for me. I’m translating a very long Christmas letter from Danish to English for a client.

Updated Dec. 5 2004: Corrected all the misspellings of Colene’s name in this post.

Updated Mar. 29 2008: Added in Shane’s name.

Hmm, I do want to learn Inuktitut one day so “maktaaq” is my first word. But there are other reasons. I think I wrote about it before but I can’t find that post now.

It was nice meeting you last night!

  4. […] The Whip is a … peculiar place. In my early days in Vancouver I went there a few times (incidentally for some of the earlier Blogger Meetups back when they were organized by Darren Barefoot) and the venue has certainly changed in the time since then.
